How to Crochet a Beanie

by Okey Dokeys 05 Aug 2025 0 Comments

Looking to stitch up something warm and wearable? You’re going to love learning how to crochet a beanie. This soft and stretchy project is perfect for beginners and makes a go-to gift for friends, family, or, let’s be honest—you.

We’re keeping things simple with a flat panel design, minimal shaping, and extra squish. You’ll be cozy in no time.

Beginner-Friendly Crochet Instructions

This cozy make uses a mix of half double crochets (hdc) and single crochets (sc), with the back loops worked to give that classic ribbed look. It's worked back and forth, then stitched together to form a tube—easy peasy.

What You’ll Need:

  • Super Bulky or jumbo chenille yarn (our Okey Dokeys Super Bulky yarn is so perfect for this!)

  • Crochet hook (5.5mm–7mm works well)

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

Finished Size:

Roughly 20–24” around — but you can add or subtract rows to adjust the fit (especially if you’re using a different kind of yarn than super bulky).

Let’s Get Started!

Row 1:

  • Ch 38

Row 2:

  • (Start in second chain from hook)

  • In back loops only: 30 hdc, then 7 sc

Row 3:

  • Ch 1

  • In back loops only: 7 sc, then 30 hdc

Rows 4–39:

  • Repeat Rows 2 and 3

Assembly Time

  1. Fold your piece so the short ends meet.

  2. Seam the sides using a whipstitch or slip stitch to make a tube.

  3. With a yarn needle, weave along the top edge, then cinch it tight like a drawstring.

  1. Flip it right side out and fold over the bottom lip.

Want to personalize it? Try adding a pom-pom, turning up the brim, or playing with colors!
