How to Crochet the Blanket Stitch

by Okey Dokeys 23 Dec 2025 0 Comments

The โ€œblanket stitchโ€ in crochet isnโ€™t about sewing edges โ€” itโ€™s a stitch pattern that builds a nice dense fabric using only simple stitches. Itโ€™s a great goโ€‘to for blankets (duh), but also scarves, hats, washcloths โ€” anytime you want cozy warmth and a fabric that isnโ€™t too holey.ย

What Makes the Blanket Stitch Great

  • Uses only single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) โ€” no fancy or complicated stitches.

  • Builds up dense, warm, and soft fabric โ€” perfect for blankets or winter projects.

  • Easy to memorize and repetitive โ€” after the first few rows, youโ€™ll get into a nice rhythm, ideal for bingeโ€‘watching + hooking sessions.

What Youโ€™ll Need to Get Started

Item

Purpose

Yarn

Any yarn works, but worstedโ€‘weight or chunky yarn makes a cozy, thick fabric

Crochet Hook

Match it to your yarn size (standard for worsted, larger for chunky)

Scissors

For cutting yarn when you finish

Yarn needle

For weaving in ends neatly

Blanket Stitch Pattern: Stepโ€‘byโ€‘Step

Step 1: Foundation Chain

Start with a chain in a multiple of 3 โ€” this ensures the stitch pattern lines up properly.

Row 1

  • In the 3rd chain from the hook, make 2 dc.

  • Skip the next 2 chains โ€” in the next chain, make 1 sc, then 2 dc in that same chain * Repeat this pattern across the row until you reach the end.

  • In the final chain, make 1 sc.

  • Chain 2, then turn your work.

Row 2 (and following rows)

  • 2 dc in the first sc from the row below.

  • Skip the next 2 dc, then in the next sc make 1 sc + 2 dc * Repeat across.

  • At the end of the row, finish with a sc into the top of the turning chain.

Repeat Row 2 until your piece reaches the desired length.

Thatโ€™s it! Simple, repeating pattern โ€” perfect for blankets, scarves, or anything cozy.

Why The Stitch Works Well for Blankets (Or More!)

  • The alternating dc pairs + sc make a dense, warm texture โ€” ideal for snuggly blankets that donโ€™t leave cold spots.

  • Because the pattern repeats every row the same way, itโ€™s easy on the brain โ€” great for watching TV, chatting, or relaxing while crocheting.

  • You can make the project as wide or as long as you like โ€” just start with fewer or more chains, and keep repeating the rows until itโ€™s the size you want.ย

Project Ideas to Use the Blanket Stitch

  • A cozy afghan or throw blanket โ€” its original โ€œblanketโ€‘purposeโ€ stitch

  • A chunky scarf or shawl โ€” great for winter wear with warm, dense fabric

  • Washcloths or dishcloths โ€” dense enough to scrub or absorb, but soft on hands

  • Hats or beanies โ€” the thick fabric helps block wind and keep warmth in

  • Bag panels or tote bags โ€” structured enough to hold shape without being floppy

Final Stitchย

The blanket stitch is a perfect โ€œgoโ€‘toโ€ pattern when you want easy, cozy, and dependable crochet. Itโ€™s simple enough for beginners, but versatile enough for experienced crocheters. Whether youโ€™re making a gift, starting your first blanket, or just playing with yarn, this stitch delivers warmth and comfort โ€” with minimal effort.

So grab your yarn and hook, chain up, and letโ€™s get crocheting that cozy goodness!
