How to Crochet the Diamond Stitch
The diamond stitch is a stunning, textured crochet stitch that creates raised โdiamondsโ across your fabric using front post treble crochets. It looks impressive, but once you get the hang of the repeat, itโs a rhythmic and satisfying pattern thatโs perfect for scarves, blankets, and cozy accessories.

Row 1: Foundation Row
Start by making a chain in a multiple of 4 + 2. Once your chain is ready, single crochet in the second chain from your hook. Then, single crochet across the row to build your foundation. Easy peasy!

Row 2: Start the Diamond Design
-
Make a double crochet in the first stitch.
-
Continue with double crochets across the row, one in each stitch.
-
Chain 1 at the end of the row

Row 3: Create Your First Diamonds
-
Turn your work.
-
Begin by making a front post treble crochet (FPTC) around the third single crochet from Row 1 (not the row you just completed).

-
To do this:
-
Yarn over twice.
-
Insert your hook from front to back around the post of the 3rd single crochet in Row 1.
-
Yarn over and pull through (you have 4 loops).
-
Yarn over, pull through 2 (3 loops).
-
Yarn over, pull through 2 (2 loops).
-
Yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops.
-
Then, single crochet into the next three stitches in the current row (starting from the second stitch).

-
Next, make a front post treble crochet two together (FPTC2TOG):
-
Yarn over twice and insert your hook around the same post you just used (in Row 1).
-
Complete the first leg of the treble (leave 2 loops on the hook).

-
Yarn over twice again and skip 3 stitches in Row 1, inserting your hook around the 4th single crochet post.
-
Complete the second leg and finish the FPTC2TOG.

-
Skip 1 stitch behind the FPTC2TOG, then single crochet in the next 3 stitches.
-
Repeat the same process:
-
Make another FPTC2TOG (first leg in the same post as the last FPTC, second leg in the next available post 3 stitches over).
-
SC in next 3 stitches, skipping the one behind the FPTC2TOG.
-
At the end of the row, make 3 single crochets, and then:
-
Start one more FPTC, working around the last post you usedโbut stop when you have 2 loops left.
-
Insert your hook into the last stitch of the row, yarn over, pull through, and pull that loop through the remaining 2 on your hook to finish the row.

Row 4: Double Crochet Across
-
Chain 2 and turn your work.
-
Double crochet across the row, one in each stitch.

Row 5: More Diamonds Begin to Appear
-
Chain 1 and turn.
-
Single crochet in the first 2 stitches.
-
Youโll now make another FPTC2TOG, but this time working into the diamond shapes below:
-
First leg: insert into the top of the first FPTC two rows below.
-
Second leg: insert around the next FPTC2TOG, grabbing both legs from the post.
-
Complete the stitch as usual.

-
Skip 1 stitch hidden behind the FPTC2TOG, then SC in next 3 stitches.
-
Repeat across:
-
FPTC2TOG (first leg in previous FPTC2TOG, second leg in next FPTC2TOG two rows down).
-
SC in next 3 stitches, skipping one behind each FPTC2TOG.
-
At the end of the row, after your last FPTC2TOG, SC in the last 2 stitches.

Row 6: Double Crochet
-
Chain 2 and turn your work.
-
DC in the first stitch, then across the whole row.
Row 7: Repeat and Expand the Diamond Pattern
-
Chain 1 and turn.
-
Start the row with a FPTC in the first FPTC2TOG two rows below.

-
SC in next 3 stitches, then continue:
-
Make FPTC2TOG:
-
First leg: previous FPTC2TOG two rows below
-
Second leg: next FPTC2TOG two rows below
-
SC in next 3 stitches, skipping one behind the FPTC2TOG.
-
Repeat to the end of the row.
-
Finish with 3 single crochets, then begin a FPTC in the final post and complete the row by inserting into the last stitch and pulling the loop through both loops on the hook.

Diamond Stitch Repeat Pattern
From here on, repeat Rows 4โ7 to continue building your diamond pattern! As the stitch grows, the texture becomes even more defined, and the raised diamonds will start to pop beautifully from the fabric.
This stitch pairs beautifully with plush yarns like chenille or velvet for maximum texture, but it also looks elegant in cotton or acrylic. Whether you're working on a full-sized throw or a detailed scarf, the diamond stitch gives your project structure and visual interest.
